The Blenio Valley, affectionately known as the "Valley of the Sun" (Valle del Sole), is a dramatic alpine corridor carved by the Brenno River, stretching from the sunny lowlands of Biasca up to the historic village of Olivone. Geographically, the valley is framed by the towering peaks of the Adula Massif to the east, including the Rheinwaldhorn, which stands as the highest point in Ticino at 3,402 meters. This microclimate offers significantly more sunshine than neighboring regions, allowing vineyards to flourish in the lower reaches before the landscape yields to the rugged granite of the surrounding Alps. Historically, the region was defined by a "dual economy": while women managed the agricultural terraces, men emigrated to become master confectioners across Europe, eventually returning to build the grand, neoclassical "Emigrant Villas" that still characterize Olivone today.

Cycling through this sun-drenched landscape offers a vertical journey through time, as riders follow a route past the ruins of Serravalle Castle and the Romanesque frescoes of San Carlo di Negrentino. The path mirrors the trajectory of a dismantled railway line, providing a steady pull toward the upper valley where the silhouette of the pyramid-shaped Sosto mountain dominates the skyline above Olivone. As the asphalt transitions into ancient mule tracks and forest trails, the terrain becomes a rugged playground for mountain bikers, winding between the steep flanks of peaks like Cima di Gana Bianca and Pizzo di Cassimoi. This blend of historical landmarks and challenging alpine geography makes the stretch to Olivone a centerpiece of the valleyโ€™s enduring rural heritage.
